Success For All

Why is employee ownership such a big deal?

We believe employee ownership is an ingredient in our formula that drives us to build better. Being 100 per cent employee-owned means that we are all working toward a common goal because we all have a piece of the ownership; our success is our responsibility.

Employee ownership means that a company is owned exclusively by employees through a share or unit plan. It empowers employees to collectively make decisions about the business and means each owner is accountable for the bottom line, aligning employees and values. Employees having ownership of their company isn’t a new thing; it’s been around since the early 1700s, invented by Benjamin Franklin, who owned a printing press and created it because of his beliefs regarding the concept of economic equality.

“I was lucky to have great mentors that showed me the value of becoming an owner. It made me feel like I was more integrated into the success of the company and that doing my part benefited me and my fellow partners”

Chandos hasn’t been around since the 1700s, but we have been employee owned since our inception in 1980. Employee ownership was an easy decision that came with the idea that leadership and ownership needed to be shared to drive continual improvement. When employees are owners, it drives our results because we’re responsible for the bottom line, and benefit from it. Traditionally, employee ownership structures utilize units that have different voting classes, but we only have one class of unit, meaning that everyone has the same voting rights and a voice.
