The Sacred Heart Parish in Strathmore, Alberta, has been hosting services and mass in a local Catholic school since 2007, and in 2013, the Parish bought a former IGA to be converted into the home of their new church.
Our Special Services Group team was chosen to partner with the Parish in 2023 to complete this renovation. The project consisted of a full envelope replacement, upgrades to the structural foundations, adding structural steel, and a total interior fit-out, which includes a new nave & sanctuary, community hall, mezzanine, elevator, chapel, and classrooms.
The team identified major savings opportunities through foundation design changes that resulted in time, cost, and emissions savings. Our schedule was 4 months quicker than the client directed schedule, and our suggested design changes resulted in over $250,000 in cost savings compared to the original design. This scope reduction also resulted in the avoidance of 162.59 MT of emissions, which is the equivalent of removing 39 vehicles from the road for an entire year. This was completed by:
- Reducing activity
- Elimination of hauling 86 cubic meters of concrete waste
- 324 cubic meters of concrete transportation savings
- Reduced excavation and demolition
- Reducing material
- 53 cubic meters of exterior concrete slab
- 205 cubic meters of interior concrete slab
- Retaining 33 cubic meters of existing concrete
- Switching to steel core piling
This expedited schedule allowed our team to complete most of the foundation work prior to winter. This saved 840 hours of heating, avoiding a further 51MT of emissions.
The success of this project has also resulted in multiple other project opportunities including the Strathmore school and Father Lacombe projects.
