St. Joseph’s High School marked the first integrated project delivery (IPD) project in Red Deer. As a team, we defined a set of core values to guide the project, including supporting our partner’s education model and delivering a result that was inspiring, operationally effective, and sustainable—both in the building itself and in the way it was delivered.
The site needed to serve two additional schools in the near future. Using the IPD model allowed us to meet the client’s values and budget while providing a high-cost certainty. Through collaboration, we also utilized the strengths of individual partners. Real-time budget feedback kept us fully informed on the cost of elements and implications of design. We also used our value matrix to ensure that the values (to be inspirational, operational, and sustainable) were the governing factor in the project’s direction.

The use of virtual design and building information (BIM) technology allowed us to design in 3D. This generated models that contained all architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical scopes. Clash detections were performed on a regular basis between the different scopes and coordinates were regularly extracted out of the model and sent to the site for an accurate construction process. The constant updates of installs on site ensured the quality, budget, and schedule were on the right course.
This project was completed four months ahead of schedule and $4,000,000 under budget. It also achieved LEED Silver certification.
