In 2015, Edmonton’s iconic Roxy Theatre was destroyed by a fire. The site remained vacant until 2019, when we began work on constructing a new venue.
The scope of the project included shoring and underpinning the existing adjacent buildings, demolishing the existing foundation and structural supports, and constructing a 200‑person main theatre, a mixed‑use flexible space, a rehearsal hall, office, and a rooftop patio.

A photovoltaic system (ballasted system); new mechanical and electrical systems; and acoustic treatments in various spaces were also required.
Since the theatre was built on a very tight site, we utilized Lean construction principles to coordinate just‑in‑time delivery for materials and equipment. Close to 100 concrete pours were required for the scope of work. All were successfully completed while minimizing disruption to the main thoroughfare of 124th Street.

A challenge our team encountered was that the original design showed the building encroaching too closely on the city property line. As a result, we redesigned the shoring around the site and revised the overall construction approach.
The restored Roxy Theatre has brought renewed vibrancy to 124th Street, an integral part of Edmonton’s arts community.
