Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium interior restoration

The Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium interior restoration in Edmonton brought a historic landmark back to life while preserving its original structure and architectural significance.

This project included the restoration of the existing building, with the frame and interior carefully maintained. Updates included exterior glazing system frame and glass replacement, façade improvements, interior renovations and finish upgrades, re‑roofing, public washroom upgrades, lease space improvements, and full mechanical and electrical system replacements.

As part of the Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium interior restoration, we used 3D scanning to capture accurate dimensions for the new dome. This also allowed us to identify and correct high spots in the insulation early, helping avoid potential delays during construction.

The planetarium operated between 1960 and 1983 and was the first of its kind in Canada. Its restoration marks a monumental occasion for the local community.

A key component of the work involved restoring the planetarium dome. Chandos used BIM and 3D scanning to capture as‑built dimensions of the existing structure and provide accurate information to the precast supplier for design. Once the design was complete, the model was reviewed against the scan data to confirm compliance. Prior to installation, an additional 3D scan was completed to identify high points in the new insulation so they could be addressed in advance, helping prevent installation delays.

The project was delivered in a central Edmonton location adjacent to a high‑traffic intersection and surrounded by residential neighbourhoods, a pool, and a school. Dust and noise mitigation, traffic management, and environmental containment were critical considerations throughout construction, requiring careful planning to reduce impacts to the surrounding area.

As a designated heritage building, the project required extensive effort to preserve the unique character of the structure. This level of care influenced both the project schedule and budget, reflecting the additional work required to complete the rehabilitation while respecting the building’s heritage value.
